An AI project may involve research, development or introducing existing software. Distinguishing these activities matters when looking for funding: a subscription or standard integration does not automatically qualify for support.
Describe the project first
Write down the business problem, planned work, who will do the development and which technical uncertainties remain. Prepare a budget that also shows whether the project is viable without financial support.
Check WBSO eligibility
The Dutch WBSO scheme supports qualifying research and development, including technically new software developed by the business. Merely using AI is not sufficient. Review the [RVO eligibility conditions](https://www.rvo.nl/subsidies-financiering/wbso/voorwaarden) before including an expected benefit in your business case.
Look beyond a scheme name
Search the RVO portal for funding relevant to your region, partners and project stage. Check current application windows, eligible costs and conditions concerning when work may start. A programme available last year may not be open today.
Prepare a realistic application
Collect a project description, budget and schedule. Record assumptions that still need confirmation. Have eligibility assessed before promising or budgeting a financial benefit. Funding can support a useful project, but it does not replace a clear business need or a plan for maintaining the result.
