Choose an automation platform around your workflow and maintenance needs, rather than the first demonstration. Compare n8n, Make and Zapier using the same small pilot process.
Test the actual integrations
For example, use a form that creates a contact, adds a task and prepares a confirmation. Check every required action, including searching, updating and handling attachments. A listed integration does not mean every feature is supported.
Investigate exceptions
What happens with a duplicate request, an expired credential or an unavailable system? Compare how easily you can find failures and safely retry them. Ask someone on your team to modify the workflow too.
Compare total costs
Use your expected volume, peaks, maintenance time and support needs. Check current prices and limits with each provider. Self-hosting adds responsibility for updates, backups and monitoring.
Check the licence
n8n uses a [Sustainable Use License](https://docs.n8n.io/sustainable-use-license/); self-hosting does not mean every commercial use is unrestricted. Record the pilot results and choose the platform your team can maintain reliably. Review the decision when volumes or integration requirements change.
